My Approach to Counselling

My practice is built upon several foundational values. First, I honor the uniqueness of each person who joins me in conversation. This means that I listen with curiosity and respect, not assuming that I know your experience better than you do. It also means that I listen for the unique strengths and characteristics which you possess and which may be helpful as you journey to overcome the challenges for which you are seeking counselling.

I also place a significant emphasis on collaboration within my work. This means that I seek client input regarding their preferences for therapy, and tailor my approach and treatment to each person’s needs and desires. This is an ongoing process throughout therapy, with the aim of maximizing the potential benefit for clients.

I also strongly believe that your time is valuable, and that if you are seeking counselling you desire a change in your life. In order to make efficient use of our time together and ensure that your needs are met, I emphasize a goal oriented approach to my work. I do this with the recognition that goals related to certain concerns will require more time to achieve, but that ultimately you are seeking a change. I believe that it is important to honor and facilitate that pursuit.

In order to structure my services with the flexibility needed to meet client needs, I offer counselling in person, via telephone, and over the internet a secure videoconferencing software.

Within my work I draw on my training and experience using Narrative Therapy, Solution-focused brief therapy, and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, as well as mindfulness based techniques.
